Organic Certification
The term ‘organic’ is believed to be coined in 1940. It was introduced by Northbourne in the book Look to the Land where it referred to a farm with biological completeness and balanced organic life. Organic Certification can be applied to any business which directly deals with food production. The term organic is used as labeling term to certify that the product has been produced following certain approved methods. Environmentally friendly production methods are adopted for organic agriculture which help in conserving bio-diversity. The product is ensured to be safe. Certification is important as it helps to retain the credibility of the term ‘organic’.
It is important to mention that countries may slightly differ in their requirements. The United States, the European Union and Japan have a very comprehensive organic legislation. The USDA(United States Department of Agriculture) is regarded as one of the most grueling and demanding certification system. However, most of the requirements involving production standards for growing, storing the product, processing it and even up packaging and shipping remains the same by certifying agencies.
Generally, the basic elements for organic certification include:
- No usage of prohibited substance since three years
- Proper fertility management
- Prevention of soil or under groundwater leaching
- No treated seed
- Organic planting stock
- Weed control using only mechanical methods
- Animal husbandry is considered to be an important aspect of organic farming.
The term ‘organic’ encompasses standards required for:
- Crop farms
- For livestock operations
- For processing operations
Organic agriculture also considers livestock as a part of the farming system. It aims for better health and welfare of organic livestock. It is important to follow all the steps to use label ‘organic’ in the products. A proper application should be submitted to the selected certifier. On site inspection will give the opportunity to the certifier to review the operations of the applicant. Examiner will thoroughly check all the farming practices along with inputs. If all the things fall in place then the applicant can expect the approval letter. One also needs to renew this certification according to the validity of the certificate.
